Improper use of the *dupeof invocation (Sift Talk Post)
I'd * quality this if I could. I've discarded a couple of my vids that turned out to be dupes. One had over 40 votes. I'd have gladly given the votes I'd gotten over to the rightful person if I'd known how to do it at the time. Until this post I'd had no idea *dupeof even existed. Even though they're discarded, is it still possible to transfer the votes? Or do those get lost after the discard? Maybe functionality could be built into *dupeof that checked to see which of the vids was submitted first before transferring votes?

Bill Maher: New Rules 11/14/08

There are very few Canadians that I know that hold the States in any sort of high esteem.

Having Canadian friends, I know that's true. And yet you guys take every opportunity to take shots at us that you can get, which just comes across to most of us as barely disguised jealously and insecurity.

I have to say that I agree with the guy here. Check your bill of rights. The Sixth Amendment states, in no uncertain terms that all those who stand before a criminal prosecution shall:

"be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him"

Quite true, but that applies to the trial. This isn't a trial yet. As the judge pointed out, the whole point of the proceedings was to decide whether or not it was going to trial by having the defendant enter a plea. AFAIK you can't, when asked to enter a plea, refuse because theoretically if that were allowed you could tie up the proceedings forever. So when you refuse to enter a plea, judges automatically enter a plea of "not guilty" for you. Judge made the right call there and seems to be a fairly level-headed guy, since he even entertained the defendant's offer privately in chambers. He really had no obligation to do that.

Christian Rock Guitar Hero Clone: Guitar Praise
>> ^omnistegan:
Certainly a terrible game, by game quality standards, but I don't really think it's a terrible idea. I grew up on all that music, and I knew pretty much every song/artist they mentioned. Though I'm an Atheist now, I would argue to the death that Skillet, and other Christian Rock bands, make great music.

To be entirely honest, if the game quality was up to that of GH or Rock Band, I would want this game.

Just to clarify, the * terrible was for the use of boobies to try to sell a supposedly family friendly product, the atrocious production values of the game, and the almost hilarious way the announcer explains the concept of the game as if no one has ever heard of Guitar Hero or Rock Band before.

Joe Scarborough Says "Fuck You" On The Air
The Declaration of Independence has pretty much zero legal standing in U.S. law. It's an astounding document, to be sure, but is not considered part of Constitutional law. If you want to talk about Freedom of Speech in U.S. law, then you need to refer to the Constitution and the subsequent Supreme Court cases surrounding Freedom of Speech.

As I understand it, the FCC won a case in the Supreme Court over 30 years ago that basically allows them to fine public broadcasters for the use of swear words between the hours of 6AM and 10PM, as those are the hours children are most likely to be watching TV. Freedom of speech is not being impinged upon because people are still allowed to say what they want on TV. The people aren't fined or arrested for their swears--the broadcasters who subsequently broadcast the statements unfiltered are the ones who get the fine. In fact, up until the Bono incident a few years ago, the FCC did not even bother fining broadcasters when swears slipped past during live broadcasts. It was only scripted TV episodes that it focused on.

The FCC rules have since become rather pointless because technology (cable, satellite, and the Internet) have put most channels beyond the FCC's jurisdiction. So it really is something of a non-issue from the Freedom of Speech standpoint. Cable companies bleep swears only because they do not want to have to deal with the deluge of letters from angry parents and the negative publicity that might follow if their channel gets perceived as hurting or corrupting children.

Doggie Thinks, "I am Confuzzled."
>> ^lucky760:
Is that kitten in the Matrix or what?

The cat clip is from a website in Japan called "Nikoniko Douga." Basically, as the vid plays people can stream their comments across the screen, which is what you're seeing. I have no idea why it's popular, as most of the comments are utter gibberish or typical YouTube-style comment nonsense.

Upvote for Shiba-ken, IMO the best-est dogs in the whole world. They're clever and cute, although they can be a little fickle personality-wise sometimes. I miss Kenta-kun, the Shiba my host family had when I lived in Japan. He knew a ton of commands, like the typical sit, lay down, roll over, shake hands, and speak as well as stranger commands like "sleep" (he'd close his eyes).

CA Prop 8 completely ruined my Obama celebration (Terrible Talk Post)
>> ^imstellar28:
if you had voted in a president who upholds a rule of law instead of a rule of majority, you wouldn't have to worry about 51% of people banning gay people from getting married...

What does the President of the U.S. have to do with a Prop vote? It's the Supreme Court that will eventually decide what the rule of law should be, not the President.

What boggles my mind is that to change the California state constitution requires only a simple majority vote but to provide funding for improving earthquake safety on BART requires a 2/3 majority (and it nearly failed). What the hell?

Do you see him checking to see if the kid is okay after the guy goes down? I sure don't. He's too busy standing over the guy and arguing with the mom.

Amazed at your inability to see things right in front of your eyes.

amazed at your powers of assumption from a low res silent clip of total strangers with unknown mental problems.

In reply to this comment by SDGundamX:
I believe all people have the responsibility to act calmly under pressure and not resort to immediate violence, regardless of profession. The dad didn't even check to see if the kid was okay--he was much more concerned with teaching the guy a lesson and standing over him even after he was KO'd. For that, he earns nothing but contempt from me.

I'm willing to bet my life savings that if it were a cop throwing the punch in this vid.....

Oh, you mean a trained professional who knows how to deal with these situations, can act calmy under pressure, is not related to the victim of the attack, and is paid to serve the community...

I see the comparison.
